Cafe Buijs – Den Haag, Netherlands

Have you ever noticed that sometimes you find your best all-around eating in little neighborhood cafes?  I mean, I’m all for a nice restaurant.  It’s fun to get all dressed up and do some adventurous (and sometimes expensive) eating.  But there’s something about those little neighborhood joints.  Good food, casual ambiance and a place where everyone knows your name just mix into something reliably and brilliantly good.

Recently, I had the good fortune for Guido vanden Elshout (otherwise known as the Happy Hotelier) to take me to his favorite neighborhood cafe in Den Haag, Netherlands – an adorable place with exposed brick walls and only a few tables called Cafe Buijs.

Cafe Buijs is located on a quiet residential street full of old row houses in the heart of Den Haag.  It’s a gorgeous neighborhood – full of homes, flower shops and quaint cobblestone streets.  And the cafe itself, though small, is absolutely charming.

The menu was all in Dutch – but Guido highly recommended the “ossenhaaspuntjes in ketjapsaus.”  He said it was the best thing on the menu.  Now, I’m that weird girl – in fact, I may be the only girl – who isn’t fond of ketchup.  I’ve never cared for it.  I had no idea what to make of “ketjapsaus.”  And I couldn’t make head or tail of what ossenhaaspuntjes might be.  But since Guido recommended it, I figured it was well worth a try.

And, oh my, it was.  The sauce was not ketchup-y at all.  In fact, I learned that night that ketjap does not equal ketchup.  Ketjap is more of an Indonesian-like sauce.  And ossenhaaspuntjes?  It turned out to be beef medallions.  The whole dish came together just the right way.  Not unlike the cafe itself.

So next time you visit Den Haag, don’t head straight to the fancy restaurants.  Ask a local for their favorite neighborhood cafe.  You never know what surprises may be in store.
